Posted on: November 12th, 2014 by addavis

Instructors and writing center directors and consultants from The Department of Writing and Rhetoric recently presented papers and participated in round table discussions at the National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing and the International Writing Centers Association’s annual conference in Orlando, Florida. Attendees included Ms. Taylor Brack, Ole Miss senior and an undergraduate writing consultant in the University’s Oxford campus writing center; Ms. Jeanine Rauch, Director of the DeSoto Campus’s writing center; Mr. Ben Lowery, W&R adjunct instructor and past assistant director of the Oxford writing center; Mr. Brad Campbell, director of the Oxford campus writing center; and Dr. Alice Johnston Myatt, W&R associate director.

Presentations included papers on the best practices of collaborative work, online tutoring of writing, and the development of TutorCon, an annual event that is planned by the University’s writing center consultants and administrators. TutorCon brings writing center tutors and directors from across Mississippi to the beautiful Oxford campus for a day of professional development, giving them an opportunity to share experiences and strategies about the way in which writing centers work with student writers, helping them to become more confident and flexible in their writing skills.

Writing & Rhetoric sponsors screening of climate change documentary /Disruption/

Disruption, a Film by Kelly Nyks and Jared P. Scott

Please be our Guest and Invite your Friends to Attend! In partnership with UM’s Students for a Green Campus, the Department of Writing and Rhetoric would like to invite you to attend a screening of Disruption on Monday September 15 at 6:30pm in Lamar Hall 327.

What: “When it comes to climate change, why do we do so little when we know so much?” Disruption examines the devastating consequences of our inaction. The terrifying science, shattered political process, unrelenting special interests and civic stasis that brought us to this social, moral and ecological crossroads. This is the story of our moment in history. We are in an age of rapid social and planetary change. We’re the first generation to feel the impacts of climate disruption, and the last generation that can do something about it. The film makes a compelling call for bold action to tip the balance and build a clean energy future.

Why: Several bodies including New York-area community groups, international NGO’s, grassroots networks, and faith organizations are convening to collaborate on the People’s Climate March in September. The March is being organized in a participatory, open-source model. This means there isn’t a central “decision-making” body or single coalition. This March is going to be a success because of the work we all do together. Take initiative to organize your community, school, workplace, and neighbors. Find out how you can help, or how your organization can support the People’s Climate March at 350.org.
